lady-justice-7313898_640.png

Professor: Christine Houston
Course Description: The focus is on the student's journey in transitioning to the RN pathway/ bridge, forming the basis for discussions. Ethical challenges are pervasive in various aspects of a nurse's professional life. This course teaches ethical principles, philosophies, ethical values, and professional nursing values.

Blog 3 Assignment

  1. Share a story in ONE of the following two scenarios where in practice or during your nursing studies...What is different about competent adults refusing treatment for themselves compared to refusing treatment for a child?

    • a patient refused treatment for themselves or

    • a guardian refused treatment for a patient who was a child/person with disabilities

  2. Discuss the notion of a mature minor. What kinds of things should a child demonstrate in order to be considered a mature minor?

  3. Which moral theory best fits this week's case study? Why?

Exploring the ethical complexities of competent adults refusing treatment, I contributed a case study involving a rehabilitation patient making informed decisions about prescribed laxatives. This essay allowed me to examine distinctions between competent adult decision-making and decision-making for children, emphasizing the importance of respecting autonomy and understanding legal considerations for mature minors. Completing this essay reinforced the significance of applying ethical principles and moral theories to provide competent and ethical nursing care.

NURS 1074: Theoretical Foundations of Nursing

Professor: Angie Lim

Course Description: This course allows students to investigate the significance of therapeutic relationships and the nurse's role as facilitator in their establishment. Reflecting on transitional issues specific to RN practice in Ontario, students also assess their personal learning styles, ways of knowing in relation to themselves, and the importance of delivering culturally sensitive care.

Scholarly Paper assignment

My essay compares my holistic interpretation of the nursing metaparadigm, emphasizing mental, spiritual, and cultural dimensions with Dorothea's Orem's Self-care Deficit theory, which centers on self-care abilities. I highlight the need for adaptable, culturally sensitive nursing practices, emphasizing the importance of embracing diverse perspectives for high-quality, patient-centred care. This work reinforced my commitment to holistic nursing, addressing the complex needs for patients with sensitivity and cultural competence.

Professor: Amanda Spallacci

Course Description: This course teaches how to write scholarly research paper using critical thinking, APA format, and referencing.

Reflection to Research Assignment

In choosing to write about my experience with patient and family in a long-term care facility, I aimed to shed light on the challenges faced in healthcare, particularly, concerning language barriers. My contribution involved reflecting on a specific incident where communication difficulties affected patient care, prompting me to explore the broader implications and propose solutions. Completing this essay meant recognizing the vital role of effective communication in providing optimal care and advocating for strategies to overcome language barriers in healthcare settings.

NURS 1072: Critical Thinking to Scholarly Writing

Professor: Amanda Spallacci

Course Description: This course teaches how to write scholarly research paper using critical thinking, APA format, and referencing.

Annotated Bibliography Assignment

This assignment focuses on exploring strategies to overcome language barriers between nurses and patients or their families in healthcare. Four primary scholarly articles are reviewed to provide insights into potential solutions or areas requiring further investigation. In my encounters with patients facing language barriers, I have come to realize that, despite Canada being a diverse country, it lacks the necessary structure to overcome these language barriers.

Exploring potential solutions and challenges in healthcare communication through this assignment was meaningful for me, reinforcing the importance of cultural competence and patient-centred care in my future nursing practice.

This assignment is about answering the questions based on the article “Taking a One-Week Break from Social Media Improves Well-Being, Depression, and Anxiety.” Focus only on the study’s findings related to depression.

I received 100% and positive feedback on a written assignment that explored the impact of social media on mental health, which deepened my interest in the link between social media use and depression.

NURS 3005H: Role Transition RPN to RN

Professor: Melanie Brunet

Course Description: This course explores Meleis’s transition theory and its application to the role shift from RPN to BScN-prepared RN within Ontario’s healthcare system. Students will examine relevant literature and apply this knowledge to plan their own professional transition.

Critical Analysis Paper

This individual assignment requires students to create a step-by-step, evidence-based plan to address our personal challenges in transitioning from RPN to RN. Using Meleis et al.’s (2000) transition theory, reflect on our key challenges and outline strategies to overcome them. In my critical analysis paper, I explored personal challenges affecting my transition from RPN to RN, including managing ADHD, financial responsibilities toward supporting my mother, and language barriers as a non-native English speaker.

NURS 3020H: Clinical Practice Acute Care

Professor: Danela Cahuas

Clinical Instructor: Sonia Chahal

Course Description: This course involves group practice in a medical or surgical inpatient setting, focusing on adults with acute illnesses. It is supported by Laboratory activities such as medication administration, sterile techniques, IV skills, and various clinical assessments (e.g., abdominal, neurological, respiratory, pre/post-operative, and glycemic status).

Reflective Journals: This assignment involves submitting two critical reflections linked to my current clinical placement. Each reflection should show knowledge synthesis, apply professional theory and research, and include an action plan for ongoing growth.

Reflective Analysis 1: Navigating Workplace Incivility as a Student Nurse
In this reflection, I explored my experience with workplace incivility during my acute care placement on the Telemetry Unit. Despite having prior RPN experience, I encountered dismissiveness and unprofessional behavior from some staff, which made me feel undervalued and emotionally drained. Through critical reflection, I examined the structural and interpersonal challenges students face and emphasized the importance of resilience, emotional intelligence, and the need for proactive strategies to address incivility in clinical settings.

Reflective Analysis 2: Building Therapeutic Communication with an Elderly Patient
This reflection focuses on a meaningful interaction with a 94-year-old patient who initially seemed confused and withdrawn. By staying present, offering gentle support, and listening actively, I was able to establish a therapeutic connection. I reflected on the challenges and importance of patient-centred communication in a fast-paced clinical environment, particularly with older adults, and emphasized how small acts of compassion can create emotional safety and promote trust in nurse-patient relationships.
